My name is molester, but you can just call me Ray and I have recently (very, VERY recently) gotten into this RP kind of thing, as I was introduced by one of my friends and to say the least, I am incredibly new to this kind of stuff. I'm mostly into brainless video games and other than that, good fanfiction and literal books.

Although, I am asking for assistance here - I have read HarleyThomas' guide on how to RP, however some other tips or
' expectations ' would be nice. Grammar isn't the problem, however, unfortunately sometimes a typo here and there may pop up in my text, or maybe my brain would go full retard and just fuck up in general.

I did browse through a topic or two (or ten) and I have to say, you people aren't the friendliest, but the posts sure are entertaining as hell to read.

Welcome to the forum. Your initial assessment is correct, everyone here is an asshole, myself included. You learn to get used to it though.

That said, ignore Harley's shit. It is a shit guide for shitty people. Write like a real person, not like you're a screenwriter.

I don't care if posts are written in paragraph form or in screenplay form. Needless to say, I've looked at the pros and cons of each, & I find screenplay form to work the best. Which is why the guide exists: You have to know what the shorthands mean if one of the posters is using them.

Or you can just continually insult the poster for using a stupid form to write.

Honestly, how is, "Noct whispered, 'I'm yelling.'" harder to understand than, "N: [I'm yelling.]"?

One of those has no barrier to entry, you just read it and it makes sense, the other require you to train yourself to read posts a certain way. It is nonsensical to assume the latter is the easier of the two.

Well, for starters, brackets are thought, not whispering. Now, here's where I expect you to shout, "See! It's so confusing!"

But thought is actually a better example. In a big damn paragraph, it's hard to notice a few sentences that are italicized. Hence the brackets.

See, your argument is all memorization, it doesn't take readability into account. And even then, it's not just about readability.

People who try to write long paragraphs have a history of being much more likely to insert useless filler, as well as performing several actions before the other(s) are able to respond. The RPs are supposed to be action/reaction.

Kind of like a screenplay.

And a screenplay omits things like, "He said x sexily" because it is just superfluous. All I need to get across is that Euryale is speaking. Besides, saying, "Euryale said," "Lilith said," "Roatha said," "Euryale responded," etc. is repetative anyway.

Speaking of repetative speech, back to the whispering: I don't have to stop the speech halway through to denote that whispering is happening, then stop it again to explain that the whispering section is over. I can just use parentheses. One flowing section of speech, no breaks, quickly transitions from normal to whisper to back without stopping the reader to explain it.

You are also neglecting that it isn't all about speech. With some kind of header, I can denote a change in location or status without describing it, cutting down on space. This is especially useful for longer posts.

Now, I expect you to say, "But it has all of these annoying problems!" Duh. Nothing is perfect. The point is, all I ever said was that weighing the pros and cons of both, I find the "Official Way" easier to work with.

It is not an "assumption," the conventions have been developed through trying things & seeing what works.

But these are all things that I've explained before, which is why I wish you'd just drop it already, it is annoying to respond to the same regurgitated arguments over & over again.

Though, I will say one thing I've yet to say: The easiest way for a given individual to post is probably to mix elements from more than one style. After all, that is how all of this was developed in the first place.

Yes, but you're cutting away the very things that most people get into RPing in the first place for: WRITING. It would be like loving to draw the human figure, and having someone say that stick figures are the way to go because it most easily, and quickly, gets the point across. Sure, that is well and good, if a bit abstract to the mind, but it is cold, and impersonal. What's more, a well detailed figure can get the point across just as well as a stick figure, but is far more enjoyable to actually draw (disregard the latter part of my argument being based on opinion [disregard that this WHOLE thing is based on opinion]).

No one is required to post in any certain way.

I know, but I have opinions and everyone should hear them, and if they disagree I should yell at them. It is the internet after all.

I mix both. I agree with Script, the reason why I do this instead of DnD in my buddy's basement is to write. I like telling a story with others and not just the back and forth "hey" "hi" "you look funny" "thanks."

Then at the same time, I have seen the usefulness of screenwriting style to make certain things just easier to understand. I do like Ryder: "Thanks." over "Thanks," says Ryder. It doesn't feel as annoying to write out.

But everyone has their preference and as long as everyone knows what it all means, we're good.
