Orion: I’ve been looking for something to do while the Lambda and Sigma Servers are down, so I decided to catalogue my knowledge of monsters and share it with the public.
A lot of people think that monster species mean nothing. There are no skills that attack specific species, and monsters almost never have attacks that are exclusive to them. Indeed, it is not uncommon to find players who don’t even realize that there are different monster species.
But an observant player will realize that monster species actually does change how you should fight in some very important ways. Note that this list does not describe all of the abilities of all of the monsters of a certain species, just universal characteristics and tendencies.
======================================================
Warriors: Male fighters. At lower levels, they imitate classes of The World. At higher levels, they become powerful, heavily armored brutes.
Amazons: Female fighters. At lower levels, they imitate classes of The World. At higher levels, they become powerful, rapid-attacking brutes.
Wizards: Floating magic-users. Speedy monsters that keep their distance and harass you with magical attacks and status effects. At higher-levels, they become “liches,” but aren’t actually undead.
Witches: Functionally the same as wizards, but appearing as robed witches, with stronger ones having more elaborate, obscuring dress.
Golems: Animated constructs with great physical power. Some golems can cast magic. Have high body resistance.
Birds: Birds are odd because they always seem to have some human characteristics. They tend to have high physical evasion and a wood-affinity.
Crustaceans: Have strong defenses due to their thick shells, and strong attacks because of their massive claws. Tend to be water themed.
Demons: Tend to have fire and dark affinities and be among the highest level enemies in a field. Demons are equally resistant to all status effects, albeit to varying degrees between individual monsters.
Earth Elementals: Exactly what it says. They also tend to use Rig Saem.
Fish: Giant fish that can move about on land or in the air. Water-attribute. Surprisingly strong physically and magically. And, in this poster’s opinion, very disturbing. Seriously, giant starfish just…
rolling towards you.
Goblins: A surprisingly diverse group of monsters. Small goblins will be warriors and mages. Larger goblins become surprisingly strong ogres with heavy iron weapons.
Hounds: Giant dog-like monsters. Tend to be fire themed and have the ability to attack many times quickly, especially because most have multiple heads. Dogs have some resistance to bodily effects.
Idols: These statues can resurrect fallen monsters, but only if they act quickly. Resistant to all status effects. Idols are unique in that all Idols are different versions of the same kind of monster.
Knives: Animated weapons. Tend to have high defense and attack. Have high mind resistance.
Lizards: This is sort of a dump category, containing all reptiles that don’t fit into other categories. But because of this, they can utilize various elements and status effects, so there’s no general rule to fight them, except that they are about equally resistant to all status effects, albeit to varying degrees between individual monsters. This category includes the Dragon and Wyrm subtypes, which have elemental breath attacks, one of the few monster-exclusive attacks.
Plants: These are moving, carnivorous plants, such as trees and flowers. Unsurprisingly, they have a wood-affinity, and are very slow. Because of this, they tend to rely on magic.
Snakes: Versatile monsters that appear as lamia and giant snakes. Lamia cast sleep and paralysis. Giant snakes can cause poison with their normal attacks, and sometimes have multiple heads to attack with.
Mimics: These guys imitate valuables, usually treasure chests, and make heavy use of status effects, and resist them. You can think of them as being like a trapped treasure chest that actively tries to kill you, and can strike again and again.
Undead: Shambling corpses with strong resistance to body status. Often have darkness attribute. Sometimes have drain moves at higher levels.
Insects: Versatile monsters that can take the form of swarms, giant insects, and the like. Can inflict status effects, sometimes with their normal attacks.
Ghost: While undead are shambling corpses, ghosts are disembodied spirits. They tend to have draining effects and darkness affinity, as well as being very physically evasive.
Aliens: These bizarre, otherworldly creatures appear later on in the game. They tend to be very powerful for their levels, and have a slight resistance to body ailments.
