Oddly, Basch was first replaced by Balthier, then he was replaced by Vaan. I believe Ashe was supposed to be the main character at one point as well. This is why Vaan is so outclassed by the "supporting" characters.

It doesn't help that Balthier is goddamn fabulous.

Fran's "arc" would have been cliche bullshit.
